Our role

In pursuit of wai sovereignty

Originally established by the Water Services Entities Act 2022, as part of the Three Waters reforms, Waipuna ā rangi started as the iwi regional representative group on Water Services Entity Aresponsible for providing joint oversight with Council representatives of local water services entities.

Since then, the Government has adopted a new planLocal Water Done Wellto address New Zealand’s long-standing water infrastructure challenges.​

 

Waipuna ā rangi is a voice for mana whenua across the rohe as the Government's new water policy takes effect, representing the interests of the 45 hapū and iwi across Te Tai Tokerau and Tāmaki Makaurau.

Waipuna ā rangi is working with 75 marae across the rohe to help understand their water needs and develop infrastructure—while preserving their unique cultural heritage—in pursuit of wai sovereignty.
