Waipuna ā rangi is a whetū within the Matariki/Puanga cluster.
Waipuna ā rangi is associated with the rain, precipitation, and water that pools.
Waipuna ā rangi emphasises the relationship water has to our human life cycle, how it is evaporated from the rivers, oceans and lakes, to fall again as precipitation which we drink, and use in many ways.
Waipuna ā rangi recognises the vital importance of clean, healthy water to nourish us, for maintaining the health of our water bodies, our freshwater ecosystems and our communities that rely on them.
Therefore, Waipuna ā rangi symbolises ‘balance’ and ‘reciprocity’.
The appearance of Waipuna ā rangi at the rise of Matariki would forecast the weather for the new year. Thus, Waipuna ā rangi is also symbolic as a herald for the future.
